22 candidates are competing in the Detroit City Council primary. See who they are
A total of 22 people will compete in the primaries for five Detroit City Council seats on Aug. 5 ― a slate of candidates that includes state lawmakers, retired police officers and two former council members.
All nine Detroit City Council seats are up for reelection, but only five are being contested in the primary with more than two candidates. City Council President Mary Sheffield, who represents District 5, and Councilman Fred Durhal III, who represents District 7, are running to become Detroit's next mayor, leaving their council seats open and a slew of candidates vying to fill them. Candidates include State Rep. Karen Whitsett, who is running for District 7.
Meanwhile, Councilmembers Mary Waters and Coleman Young II are running for re-election for the at-large seats on the council, and Councilwoman Angela Whitfield Calloway is seeking another term in the District 2 seat. Calloway will face a challenge in the primary from State Rep. Helena Scott, who is running for District 2.
A questionnaire sent by The Detroit News to all candidates showed that public safety, affordable housing and economic development were top priorities for many candidates.
