Northampton mayoral candidates debate school budget

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) – Candidates for the upcoming Northampton municipal election participated in a forum hosted by the Northampton High School Student Union.

he forum, held at Northampton High School, featured current Mayor Gina Louise Sciarra, her challenger Jillian Duclos, as well as candidates vying for positions on the City Council and School Committee.

The event was organized by the Northampton High School Student Union, allowing students and community members to hear directly from those seeking office. Key topics of discussion included the school budget, addressing student needs, and policies regarding cell phone and artificial intelligence use in Northampton public schools.

Zara Usman, President of the Northampton High School Student Union, emphasized the importance of the forum, stating, “A lot of discourse in our town, and I think we’re really ready to hear that for the students who are at the forefront of these issues that we’re very active politically. And we want to hear what the candidates have to say.”
