Special Town Meeting on Saturday, special election on Tuesday: Voters to decide fate of possible new elementary school

WILMINGTON — Two upcoming important events next week in Wilmington will set the course for Wilmington’s elementary schools for the next 15 years.

On Saturday, Sept. 13, residents who come out to the Wilmington High School beginning at 9 a.m. will vote on two warrant articles. The first article requires a simple majority vote, and its passing will allow the hearing of a report from the Wildwood School Building Committee. This presentation was also given by Town Manager Eric Slagle at the Sept. 2 Finance Committee meeting. At that meeting, the Finance Committee recommended approval of both articles.

The second article proposes to see whether the town will vote to raise and appropriate, transfer from available funds, or borrow a sum of money to be expended for the construction, equipping, and furnishing of the new Wilmington Elementary School.

The article states that the school will be built at 320 Salem St., also referred to as the site of the current North Intermediate School. This article requires a two-thirds majority to pass at Town Meeting. Only those present at Town Meeting will be able to vote, although there will be several rooms in the high school from where residents may be voting.
