Portland City Council to decide on election date for minimum wage increase

PORTLAND, Maine (WGME) -- The Portland City Council is expected to set an election date on Monday on an act to increase the city's minimum wage.

The minimum wage in Portland is currently $15.50 an hour.

If this proposal passes, minimum wage would be bumped to $20 an hour over four years, meaning in 2026 it would go to $17 an hour and gradually increase by $1 until 2029.

A study from the Maine Center for Economic Policy indicates that the increase would benefit workers across all industries, especially those in low-wage sectors.
