Assistant principal fatally shot outside Berwyn's Lincoln Middle School

Assistant Principal of Lincoln Middle School Nerissa Lee was gunned down along with a 76-year woman before the assailant turned the gun on himself outside the Berwyn school on Sept. 16, 2025.

Lincoln Middle School

When reached Wednesday by a reporter, Nerissa Lee’s sister said she was overwhelmed and didn’t know if she could handle talking about her sister’s death yet.

“This is all too much for me,” Lee’s sister said.

The shooting happened about 4 p.m. Tuesday, with police responding to a call of shots fired. A man who was in a vehicle used a rifle to shoot into another vehicle before shooting himself, according to police. The man also shot at responding officers, who took cover but did not return fire, police said.

No students were hurt in the shooting, and police said they believe it was an isolated incident related to domestic violence.

young black assistant principal shot and killed. This is where things are going. I'm numb with anger and fear. Will they succeed in shutting us all up?
In the streets people!
I protest 2 to 3 times a week and people sheepishly walk by and say thank you. Others give us the death stare. I'm 69 yrs old, I and another woman my age were talking while protesting, we both said, fuck it. Let them kill us if they must. We've had a good life and we will not stop fighting this take over of our democracy.

It sucks, but women of all races are assaulted and murdered by abusive intimate partners all the time, for reasons stemming from the abuser's own pathology. Socioeconomic factors can play a role, and the easy availability of firearms in this country doesn't help, but men who do things like this do them because they have a screw loose in their own brains.

In other words, I don't think this has anything directly to do with this women being black or with shutting anyone up.

The most likely scenario is that she had recently left him. The period after leaving an abusive partners is a perilous time (see the link below). The fact that he shot her as she was leaving her workplace also points to that. I'd bet money he laid in wait for her to come out of the building so he could ambush her.

Private Violence: up to 75% of abused women who are murdered are killed after they leave their partners

There is a toxic question that surrounds abused women: “why didn’t she just leave him?”

The answer, too often, is that many women that do leave get killed.

“The thing that I did not know that was so revealing to me was that anywhere between 50% and 75% of domestic violence homicides happen at the pointm of separation or after [the victim] has already left [her abuser],” says Cynthia Hill, director of HBO’s Private Violence.

I do need to slow down when I hear this stuff. But damn it I'm in a bit of a panic this week. Still really glad I watched that video for the encouragement to not give up.
In the end it is the same violence though, from the same people. Men.

I think the main reason I haven't succumbed to it (so far) is that I somehow have the ability to compartmentalize/block out the stuff that scares me the most. Not sure where or how I learned to do that, but I'm grateful for it, as it's probably the main thing keeping me sane right now.

and then killed himself. It has nothing to do with black men being hanged by whites, and has nothing to do with our Democracy

I only posted because it happened a few blocks from me and there were lofts of helicopters flying overhead
