Illinois keeps 988 lifeline for LGBTQIA+ youth even after national extension hangs up

The federal government has pulled the funding for the national 988 suicide and crisis line extension for LGBTQIA+ youth, but Illinois is vowing to keep its line open.
The Illinois Department of Human Services announced this week it will continue to provide mental health support services for LGBTQIA+ youth, despite the Trump administration's decision to shut down the subnetwork.
The Trump Administrations decision to end these specialized services is a cruel reversal of proven practices, Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker said. Unequivocally, in Illinois, we stand side by side with each member of the LGBTQIA+ community, including transgender, nonbinary, and gender nonconforming youth. If you need help and you call 988, youll be met with the compassion, competence and respect.
The state is encouraging everyone who could benefit from crisis hotline to use it.
