Guntersville mayoral race to be settled by runoff election on September 23

GUNTERSVILLE, Ala. (WAFF) - The Guntersville mayoral race will officially be settled in a runoff election after Mayor Leigh Dollar and challenger Jeff McLaughlin tied during last week’s municipal election.

The city council met in a special meeting Tuesday after questions were raised over the legality of a runoff in a two-person race.

City Attorney Jim Beard told council members the law is unclear about what to do in event of a two-way tie. It doesn’t explicitly permit a runoff but also doesn’t forbid it.

After consulting Beard and other legal experts, the council decided a runoff election was the best way to break the draw.
