New Haven special election needed after Ward 7 alder (D) resigns a half hour prior to inauguration

NEW HAVEN — Roughly 40 minutes before representatives from the city’s 30 wards took the stage at Fair Haven School Thursday to be inaugurated for a two-year term, Ward 7 Alder Eli Sabin emailed his constituents that he would be stepping down from the board after three terms.

In his email, Sabin said he would be moving out of Ward 7, which includes parts of downtown and East Rock, to Westville — a decision he said stems from a desire to “start a new chapter of life” following his imminent graduation from Yale Law School.

“I’ll still be in town and I plan to stay involved, including through my roles as the Legislative Coordinator at Connecticut Voices for Children and on the the board of New Haven Legal Assistance,” he said.

Sabin did not immediately respond to a request for comment Friday.
