San Diego County ballot drop box still sitting in neighborhood over a week after Election Day

SAN DIEGO — A San Diego County ballot drop box remains in place more than a week after Election Day, prompting concerns from a local resident about whether ballots inside were properly collected and counted.

Stephanie Melaney first noticed the official ballot box on Thursday on Hilton Head Road near the entrance to Hilton Head County Park in Rancho San Diego. When News 8 visited the location, the box was confirmed to still be there as of Friday.

"To me, it was actually very alarming that there's a ballot box still here this length of time, and it's not been picked up," Melaney said.

Melaney's primary concern centers on whether votes cast at the location were properly processed. "If somebody in the neighborhood put a ballot in here, do they have any assurance that it was picked up, or it's still just sitting there," she said.
