SF-BOS08: In Castro, Nguyen (D) campaigns on investing in communities
Michael Trung Nguyen wants voters in San Franciscos District 8 to know he is concerned about affordability, housing production, and good governance. The progressive candidate hoping to become a San Francisco supervisor did a walking tour of the Castro over the weekend.
Top of mind is the affordability crisis were in, Nguyen, a gay attorney and Democratic Party leader also known by his drag persona Juicy Liu, told the Bay Area Reporter during a merchant walk through the Castro LGBTQ neighborhood Saturday, April 11. But also on top of that are the everyday things, quality of life. What are we doing for our unhoused neighbors? What are we doing to keep the streets clean and providing everyday services San Franciscans want?
Nguyen, 44, a patent lawyer, is running to succeed termed out gay Board of Supervisors President Rafael Mandelman, who has been District 8 supervisor since 2018, representing the Castro, Noe Valley, Diamond Heights, Glen Park, Twin Peaks, Duboce Triangle, Corona Heights and Cow Hollow neighborhoods on the citys legislative body.
Nguyen is one of three gay male candidates running. The other two are Emanuel "Manny" Yekutiel, owner of an eponymous cafe and event space on Valencia Street and a former member of the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency board, and Gary McCoy, who has led both of the citys main LGBTQ Democratic clubs, Alice B. Toklas and Harvey Milk. Mandelman has endorsed Yekutiel.
