Turnout lagging ahead of Oakland special election for mayor, councilmember, sales tax

OAKLAND, Calif. (KRON) — As we are hours away from a special election in Oakland, residents will decide on the next mayor, a new city councilmember and a sales tax intended to help close an enormous budget deficit.

With the clock winding down, the top two candidates for Oakland’s next mayor are racing against time. Former Oakland City Councilmember Loren Taylor and former East Bay Congresswoman Barbara Lee are looking to be elected to the city’s top seat.

This special election takes place after voters recalled Mayor Sheng Thao in November. That started in motion this special election.

Taylor and Lee have been talking to voters about their plans if elected. Both have drilled down on tackling what’s projected as a massive budget shortfall and public safety concerns.
