Today's expensive Southern California beach front property in the 'forties...

I remember some of this stuff was still around when I was a kid in the 'sixties.

Most of this oil infrastructure has been removed as the wells were depleted. Some wells have been hidden and are still producing oil today. People living in multi-million dollar homes don't want to see some old oil pump surrounded by weeds and a crappy chain-link fence. There were still plenty of those around in the 'sixties, even in "nice" (white...) neighborhoods like my grandparents lived in.

Gas isn't stored anymore above ground in huge tanks that rise and fall as they are filled and emptied, as seen here on the highway approaching Downtown Los Angeles. Instead it's stored underground in depleted gas fields.
