Scottsdale scraps lawsuit against law that blocks voter referendum on Axon HQ
The Scottsdale City Council on Tuesday scrapped plans to move forward with a lawsuit over a new state law that cancels a public vote on the proposed headquarters for law enforcement technology company Axon, opting instead to pursue negotiations with the company, which said earlier this year that it is done negotiating.
After the council met with its attorneys for about 90 minutes behind closed doors in executive session on Tuesday, Scottsdale Mayor Lisa Borowsky motioned to vacate the agenda item which would have had the interim City Attorney file a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of the new law.
Axon came to the state Capitol in 2025 aiming to bar voters in every city and town in Arizona from being able to challenge zoning and development decisions. But that bill failed to garner enough support, so the company and its allies pivoted instead to merely stripping away the right of Scottsdale voters to challenge the police weapons manufacturers HQ project near Hayden Road and the Loop 101.
In addition to the firms international headquarters, the project will include a luxury hotel and roughly 1,900 apartments. Governor Katie Hobbs signed Senate Bill 1543 into law in April.
