Sounds smoky and heroin-like...

I became a Monk disciple at 10 years old.
My version is a little straighter than his, but still lots of substitutions and angluarity.
Not happy with it yet, but I'll get there.

Which is probably why I associate the song with heroin. This is the first time I've heard Monk's version. He goes to outer space with all those harmonic extensions - interesting contrast.

His playing reflected classical training more than most of the other jazz greats.
His playing was pretty structured (so was Oscar Perterson's) but his ability to rhythmically exchange with drums & bass was revolutionary.
He redefined jazz trio playing.
