You may already know, but the title came from a mis-understood voice accent. Stevie was visiting Tom Petty and wife Jane and Stevie asked how long they’ve been together.
Jane said “ since the age of seventeen”, but Stevie heard her southern drawl as “edge of seventeen”. Stevie thought it was great and came up with the song.
