The first time I heard it. I went right out and bought the album. Of course by that time I was buying all they're albums as soon as they came out.

But I read somewhere that it was So Long Frank Lloyd Wright that split them.

Garfunkel was trying to break into acting. Paul Simon wrote the song because Garfunkel (who was an architect)wanted a song about Wright. So Simon repeated the words " so long" over and over In the song. Hinting they were breaking up.
