Murdock 9-6182 - Golden Earring's George Kooymans singing for his lover in 1969 + another band's hit with the song
I ran across both the clip from a 1969 film on Golden Earring, and a beautiful cover of the song that I hadn't heard of before and that was a minor hit for the Dutch band Alles, on YouTube this afternoon.
George has been married since late 1969 to his childhood sweetheart, Milly (Melanie), the younger sister of Golden Earring bass player Rinus Gerritsen. They fell in love in their early teens (not sure exactly when they met, since they lived in the same neighborhood, but George taught Rinus to play guitar in 1961, when he was 13). They've been together ever since, except for a brief separation in 1968 before Golden Earring recorded this and another song for their 1969 double album. (See this old thread from 2022 for more on that other song, and a singer George had discovered in 1968: https://www.democraticunderground.com/103478690 ).
Video of George singing the last verse of Murdock 9-6182 - the lovely blond you'll see near the end of the song is Milly - and then a really beautiful cover of the song from the Dutch group Alles, a record produced by Peter Koelewijn - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Koelewijn - a famous Dutch musician. ( Eight years later, something George said inspired a hit song for Peter - see reply 119 here: https://www.democraticunderground.com/10181674319#post119 ). Alles's cover of George's song was in the Dutch Top 40 for a month in late 1969.
