Cher & Tina Turner dance into our hearts with "Shame, Shame, Shame" ...And a mystery
This duet from The Cher Show in 1975 was possibly a very public stick in the eyes of their newly separated husbands. There's a conundrum about who wrote this song however.
One source says it was written in 1963 by the great Jimmy Reed (Bright Lights Big City) from the album "Mr Luck", but was also written in 1974 by Sylvia Robinson and made into a disco hit by Shirley & Company. The lyrics are similar with some noted differences. The pulsing Bo Diddley beat is threaded through all three versions.
Regardless who wrote it, it's a great song, and all three are included here with the 1963 lyrics posted at the bottom.
Shirley & Company:
Jimmy Reed:
[Verse 1]
Well I tried to tell you, baby
But it make no sense
Now you got me, baby
Up against this fence
[Chorus]
And ain't that a shame, shame, shame
Shame, shame the way you do
Well, it's a shame, shame, shame
Shame, shame, on you
[Verse 2]
Well now you walk out in the evenin'
Don't even say you're gone
Six o'clock in the mornin'
You come walkin' home
[Chorus]
And ain't that a shame, shame, shame
Shame, shame, the way you do
Well, it's a shame, shame, shame
Oh, it's a shame on you
[Harmonica solo]
[Verse 3]
Well, I be sittin' there waitin'
For you to come home
When I wake up, baby
I'm sittin' there all alone
[Chorus]
And ain't that a shame, shame, shame
Shame, shame, the way you do
Oh, it's a shame, shame, shame
Shame, shame on you
