(7,654 posts)My car is similar but my elderly dog rides on the back seat on a dog hammock. I have to help her into the car by lifting her back legs. She gets onto the seat by herself and I rehook that side of the hammock to my headrest.
Getting out, she sometimes loses balance on her back feet so I try to park next to grass when I take her to a walking trail.
She does enjoy her walks.

(5,214 posts)... two Shepherds; the first was pure white, and his name was Saint. The second was a long-haired Shepherd named Athena. She was the best dog I've ever known. She lived to be 14, which is pretty good for a 100-pound dog.
Then our elder son bought us a Shi Tzu. Making the transition from a German Shepherd guy to a Shi Tzu guy was traumatic, but I managed.
Now we have a rescue from Texas named Honey, due to her color. She's 3/4 Great Pyrenees and 1/4 Red Bone Coon Hound. When she was rescued she weighed 35 pounds, now she's 80! We've had her a year, marked this past weekend, and she's turning out to be a wonderful dog. She doesn't like car rides, which is unusual, but I suspect that's due to some trauma regarding car rides before we adopted her. I think it was due to her being abandoned in a strange city with her litter of pups.
Anyway, she's got her forever home now, and lovin' it.
