Animal Terror Day has begun already - KaBoom!

I live on the coast in Oregon, home to many aquatic birds and bird sanctuaries. A brown pelican colony provides endless entertainment on Yaquina Bay, dive bombing in groups when the fishing is good. They look like little pterodactyls. Up the road just a bit is a puffin rookery.

Tourists are arriving already with their boom booms, even though it's illegal to set them off here. Later on, the jetty road will be bumper to bumper to view the official fireworks, while scofflaws will be doing their own displays up and down the road.

The birds will be flying in a panic trying to escape. Pet owners will be drugging their fur babies to keep them from stressing. There is no escape for the animals.

Then everyone will go home, leaving a heavy smoke pall over the area. And the animals will begin their recovery.

I honestly hate 4th of July because of what it does to animals and birds.

I wish somehow people could turn away from them.

It's so distressing to animals try to escape, when, like you wrote, there's no escape:

The poor ponies are so distressed!

I wish more people on DU would like your post!

I hope they quit at 11. We're a rural area, so if someone goes on too late, everyone in the neighborhood will know who the ahole was...and they'll hear about it on Sunday
