You could get it without a prescription in the early '60s. We had it around the house when I was a kid, I think for toothache or some such thing.

Yes, my mother used it on my teeth quite often; however, I cannot recall the taste (of it), nor if I had any strange reactions.

From the Internet:
Paregoric, also known as camphorated tincture of opium, is a potent, opiate-agonist liquid medication historically used to treat diarrhea and/or teething problems. Because it contains morphine, paregoric is classified as a controlled substance and can be habit-forming.

At first I was trying to place that term with something very medically technical, butt could not wipe-out anything. Yes, I did Google it before I realized what you meant (in the end).

Thank you, as I really enjoyed laughing (at myself)...

I loved the flavor. Sort of candy flavored. Mom mixed a 1/2 tsp in a juice glass of water. It was effective for settling stomach upsets.

My sister worked in a drug store during high school. They had a book people had to sign to get a bottle of paregoric. At the time, she said people would come in shaking really bad, and barely able to sign the book. Sometimes the same people came in several times in a day. They stopped selling it soon after.
