The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsNovember is that time - to find a calendar for the coming year!
Have to have two calendar types - one wall, for next to the loo medicine cabinet where the morning view is inescapable, one booklet/desk for doctor's appointments & daily glucose readings. In different years one or the other or both have posed their separate obstacles - the wall, shopping madness in local retailers to find variety pics tolerable for the whole year. And the booklets, weekly view and no decoration and cheap. The bigger stores sometimes zoomed in prices for the booklets, with the greentree outlets not having sometimes, but have found something each year. If some English Major wants to write my biography, there's a box of the yearly booklets with appointments, repairs, visits out of town covering 30 or so years - what to do in the end phase of downsizing and divesting of life junk.
With the wall, the main issue is finding striking pics tolerable throughout a year. Several years ago I gave up on the local outlets and do the selecting online. The main attraction is visual beauty. Pleasing choices in recent years: New Orleans sights, Tuscany (home of the Etruscans), architectural wonders.
Automatic rule-outs: Generic landscapes, cute pets that are available everywhere and repetitive, tourist views available on postcards, pretty much any other categories imaginable.
Last year ended up with a Tiffany stained glass one, and looks like this year will be another one, here:

(44,161 posts)One in the kitchen, one in the garage, one in the office. Navy Memorial, Vietnam Vets Memorial, DAV, Old Farmers Almanac, American Heart Association. I get a car calendar from the insurance agent. Give about a half dozen away each year. And for next year in the basement I got Rust in Peace. A calendar of beat up rusted vehicles, looking good. I got a Sports Illustrated Calendar in the outbuilding. I get carried away but Im never needing a calendar.

(11,148 posts)This wall calendar was 16 month wall calendar of his cottage prints. The paper was heavy instead of thin unlike most calendars.
Once I got done with it after 16 months, I bought some picture frames and I centered the calendar print how I wanted it using the glass of the picture frame to trace the picture. Then I cut my square trace and placed it in the picture frame.
I keep the prints Misty Lane Cottage (lower left) and The Gate to the Lost Garden (upper right) on display. I have some light reflected in the Misty Lane Cottage so it might be difficult to see.

(76,352 posts)have only been there a couple of times. But then at my great age there's only maintenance repair and foodstuff things I go buy! Am into the downsize junking phase!

(11,148 posts)I've spotted quite a few broken items still for sale at Ollie's which anything broken should be taken off the shelves.
Although I've picked up that nice calendar, I got a few 60" bamboo outdoor scarecrows, some Christmas garland and some years ago I snagged Pete Souza's Obama An Intimate Portrait coffee table book.
I don't shop there very often and there's nothing wrong with downsizing. In fact, I've been working on decluttering the kitchen and living room this entire weekend.
It's okay!

(2,031 posts)as my wall calendar for the past several years. I like the simple vintage design. I use the Google calendar on my phone and tablet for my daily notations but still get a wall calendar for nostalgic reasons.
Best wishes for a great 2026!

(27,153 posts)so I'm creatively re-using 2024's. March - July 2024 lines up nicely with August - December 2025, and I can remember what month it is; all I have to see is how the dates line up.

(16,816 posts)I get at least a dozen around this time of year from animal and environmental organizations I donate to. I put them in those little neighborhood library boxes, but I still have a few. Just DM me your address if you'd like one.

(24,954 posts)I took a quick look at a big on line calendar site.
So like scenic wonders, mountains, ?National Graphic, pathways, etc.
Then I suddenly thought the tropics!
So islands, beaches: palm trees, teal, turquoise waters. Swoon!
I guess I'll get myself to Barnes & Nobles soon!
TY for the inspiration!

(56,507 posts)for a follow up appointment in February. no calendar yet so I scrawled it on the upper margin of December and hopefully will transfer it whenever I come across next years memory receptacle. wall calendar for hallway has to be from the feed store and most years a good friend sends a local version of a typical Mexican business/giveaway calendar with a single excellent image (think of a mixture of bodice-ripper paperback covers and Aztec royalty, or fantastical Catholic imagery) those decorate the kitchen.
desk and most important one just needs big day squares so I have room to make notes. a day planner would probably be more professional but I am too cheap.

(986 posts)It's specific to my small city with pictures throughout the city and people in city-wide events. I hang it on the refrigerator with magnets. I rarely use the calendar because my phone's calendar has all of my appointments on it plus, I can set a reminder to let me know when something is coming up.
I used to have Demotivational calandars in my office when I was in the AF. Most people who saw them thought they were funny and that was the second reason why I had them. The primary reason was because the AF was promoting quality improvement process, which I agreed with, but they violated on of it's principles; that of "No Sloganing," They then went and bought a bunch of framed motivational posters which was basically promoting slogans. By hanging the Demotivational calendars I was pointing out their hypocrisy. Very few people figured it out and those who did agreed with me.
