At a time when our President has turned Chicago into a war zone, something has happened which hasn't happened here for a long time.
We've got some successful sports teams. As in, more than one. At the same moment!
The Chicago Cubs actually made the playoffs and made it into the second round. True, the Brewers won the honor of getting their asses kicked by the Dodgers, but the Cubs were fun to watch more often than not.
The Bears are much improved over what they've been for the last decade or so. There's a great deal more improvement needed, but the offense was breathtaking last week, albeit over weak competition. They will probably have a losing streak coming up, as they face the Steelers, the Eagles and the Packers in succession. But right now, they're must see TV. Might make the playoffs given the parity in the NFC.
The Bulls have started the season hot, winning their first five. They're 6-3 now, losing the last two on the road to the Bucks and the Cavaliers. But their fast-paced offense and selfless play has endeared them to Chicago fans, and it's wise to remember they're missing Coby White right now, arguably their best player. Not bad.
The Chicago Blackhawks were the toast of the town a decade ago when they won their third cup in five years. But they're been mostly awful since, and until this season it had not looked like improvement would come. Enter Connor Bedard. He had not been exciting as a rookie or in his second year, but he spent the last offseason reinventing himself. Last night he got up to 22 points in 15 games, elite level production, and some of the other players on the team - like goalie Spencer Knight, winger Tyler Bertuzzi and defenseman Alex Vlasic - are fun to watch in their own right. They're 7-5-3; they are not mighty and have more growing to do. But they're a ton of fun.
So the world is going to hell in a handbasket but at least around here, four of our five major sports teams have a winning record So there's that.

(75,102 posts)I am a Sox fan. My daughter is a Cubs fan, and I've been teasing her with "1908, 2016, 2124..." She doesn't like this.
But it's nice to see a local team do well. Pete Crow-Armstrong is a future superstar, it looks like, and 3/5 of next year's starting pitchers look very impressive.
