shade is great in the summer
then fall comes along with about 2 tons of walnuts. Cant give them away around me cause everyone knows someone with a walnut tree
damn squirrels
they plant them everywhere.
I threaten that tree with choppage every fall. So much work

(4,464 posts)These trees were 50 years old, and were about 40 feet. It was a sad day for me and my mom, she cried a lot. They were here when I bought the house in 2010 and we really loved them.
Apparently these trees go up like roman candles in a fire, and they were too close to our house. Now they are just stumps. I was worried that I would have to wait for my tax return before I could afford to hire someone to do it, but a Good Neighbor helped me take them down. He cut them up to smaller pieces and I hauled them to the side of the road for chipping. The guy who helped me is in his 70s (I babysit his dog when he needs), and I told him I would take care of hauling the wood to the side of the road.
I shouldn't have done that. Now 3 days later, my lower back is very painful. I've had back surgery in the past. I'm worried I've done something really bad.
Sorry for venting on your OP Floyd. I hate seeing trees cut down. Especially beautiful trees.

(93 posts)They are a grass and contribute nothing to the environment. They hardly even give shade. and speaking of roman candles? Oh boy..

(11,577 posts)When they cut it back it SUCKS and I wish it would stop growing because in the next few years, it won't be shading my bedroom windows.
They whacked the hell out of it when it was healthy so I lost about 5 years of good shade (based on the palm fronds and how low they were hanging).
I'm on the bottom floor.

(3,572 posts)such a tropical vibe. Beetles got all three. Had to take them down over 3 years. Bummer.

(26,468 posts)I once had a neighbor who cut down all the gorgeous dogwood trees in his side yard.
He wanted more grass to mow.

(22,372 posts)and a year later, in the spring, they cut down 7 beautiful mature pines. After a one and a half years, the stumps remain. They park their cars over them.
I had neighbored with them before they slaughtered the trees, haven't talked to them since. I won't talk to them ever again.
I'm sorry you lost meaningful landmarks in your neighborhood. It is a heartache.

(7,919 posts)The previous owners were all about native plants and our front "lawns" have sort of grown together over the years with native flowers and grasses and rock formations... just a wonderful little wilderness. This spring, the new lady of the house was lamenting that she didn't have any tulips or daffodils... and they've been letting the wild grasses die...
