(89 posts)We're getting ready to watch the 1979 version of Salem's Lot. I loved the book and want to watch the newer movie, but the 1979 adaptation is a classic, imo.

(9,580 posts)I hope you can find the original broadcast version of the miniseries and not the version where they made it into a feature. For some reason, they cut out the intro and the ending for the feature release.
'Salem's Lot' was the first King book I read. It will always hold a special place in my heart.

(43,094 posts)if one I enjoy is on, I might watch it, depending on my mood, especially if it's one from the '50s/'60s that's so bad, it's great, like an Ed Wood movie.
I just watched most of Them on "Svengoolie," but before it ended one of my favorite episodes of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit came on -- one that's psychologically terrifying.

Get Away
***1/2
2024 * R * 1h 26m The title of the film could be interpreted two different ways. It could be Getaway or Get Away. Give it a watch and youll see what I mean. The film is about a British family, dad Richard, played by Nick Frost (Shaun of the Dead) and mom Susan (Aisling Bea) along with their two children, Sam (Sebastian Croft) and Jessie (Maisie Ayres). Theyre off on summer holidays to a remote island off the coast of Sweden. Little do they know that the place has a nefarious history. Apparently, there were some bloody crimes committed in the past, and they arrive just in time for an annual celebration of the event.
Whats more, theres apparently a serial killer on the loose. I thought the first half of the movie was fairly mundane. But then theres a plot twist that I definitely didnt see coming. I wont even give you even a hint at what to expectyoull just have to see it for yourself. And I dont think I need to warn you that things will definitely get pretty bloody before the credits roll!
Currently streaming on Hulu and Shudder. And to rent on YouTube, Amazon, Apple TV, Fandango, and other services.
Train to Busan
***1/2
2016 * Not Rated * 1h 58m This is not your typical zombie movie. This Korean flick goes up to 11! Its one intense experience from the opening scene, right until the end. We first see a truck cruising down the street when it hits a deer. The driver gets out and discovers the animal is dead. However, after he drives away, the animal gets up and runs away. You know right off, something mysterious is in the air. Sure enough, theres apparently a type of virus has been unleashed that instantly turns people into zombies.
The rest of the action is about a dad Seok-woo (Gong Yoo) trying to get his daughter Soo-an (Kim Su-an) from Seoul to Busan by train. It isnt long before a huge band of zombies boards the train and makes their lives holy hell. Its one bloody scene after another as the human passengers try to outwit the zombies. I thought the special effects were amazing and totally believable. As youd expect, its a wild, nail-biting, wild ride from start to finish!
Currently streaming for free on Kanopy and Hoopla (with your library card), Netflix and Plex. And to rent on Apple TV, Amazon, YouTube, Fandango, and other services.
Cobweb
***1/2
2023 * R * 1h 28m This film is far creepier than it is bloody. But it still will give you the heebie-jeebies, for sure. We meet the protagonist Peter (Woody Norman), an intelligent but shy young boy. Hes constantly picked on at school. Youd think hed get comforted by his parents Carol (Lizzie Caplan) and Mark (Antony Starr). But nope, theres something disturbingly off about both of them. Theyre both cruel and sinister and just barely empathize with what their son is going through.
Peter starts hearing a knocking on the wall of his bedroom at night. His parents dont believe him and tell him its the result of his vivid imagination. Then he begins hearing the voice of a young girl, who claims to be his sister, trapped in the wall. When hes expelled from school for pushing a bully down the stairs, things take a turn for the worse. Hes now going to be home schooled in the apparently haunted house. If you like Stephan King type movies, this ones for you.
Currently streaming on Netflix, and to rent on Amazon, Apple TV, YouTube, Fandango, and other streaming services.

(791 posts)It didn't get too many good reviews because of its "overdone found footage" genre, but as someone who doesn't watch many movies like that, I thought it was pretty freaky.

(43,841 posts)The Monkey is the latest really strange one Ive watched. (Im on a Stephen King movie kick). Im not typically a gore fan but once you catch on to what theyre doing its hysterical.
Ive rewatched From Dusk til Dawn and saw Twilight for the first time. Dear GOD what a dog, though I see what little girls might get out of it. And the usuals, Rocky Horror, The Shining, Psycho.
Btw YouTube has a spate of The Making of videos about some good horror.
