It was a miserable time for both of us. Our sweet Georgia girl had to have help to go to the bathroom, she had to have help positioning for going to the bathroom , for eating and required 3 or 4 showers a day due to messes she would make. I had to carry her everywhere, but her treatment required her to rest 24 x 7 hours a day. I thought I was going to be in the same shape she was in…my poor old back was killing me everyday. She suffered a UTI because she couldn’t control her wastes. That debilitated her further, but we finally got her on the right antibiotic to clear it up. Her pain and paralysis lasted about 2-3 months before she started getting better. Now she still walks like a drunken sailor, but she is independent once again. We have another dog, 12 years old that has recently been diagnosed with CHF and it turned out he also had a kidney infection. Got that cleared up but he has lost so much weight we’ve had to pull out all the stops to get him to eat. This has all contributed to Georgia also gaining weight and I worry that will contribute to another bout of IVDD. Don’t know if I can’t go through it again. She’s 15 now and heavier. I’ve got to get her to lose weight, but it’s hard to tell her no when the other dog is getting so thoroughly spoiled for whatever food he wants and how much of it he wants.
