(1,291 posts)Well, Martini would probably sit in my lap, but Holly? She would be under the seat. Way under the seat.

(111,323 posts)(yeah, there are those with dog allergies, but those who are (or claim to be) allergic to cats are more common.

(111,323 posts)That said, that isn't how it works for those who genuinely ARE severely (and life-threatened) allergic to cats. If they are allowed to wander or even if there is simply enough of them long enough on a train car (which may or may not be sufficiently ventilated), like on airplanes serving peanuts, it permeates.
Thus, my question. A very few may be able to make a case that this is life-threatening to them and try to get the subway officials to ban it.. My response would be that one could encounter a serious allergen nearly anywhere, and it falls to the individual to carry epinephrine injections wherever they go--whether a nut allergy or a cat/dog allergy or something else. But, I'd bet some people or groups will take it on.
So, I am afraid, no. The answer "don't sit next to them" will not suffice at all, no matter how much we cat lovers enjoy seeing them. I'm only surprised that the vocal minority has seemingly not started up... (I hope that they will not, but... )

They do quickly re-emerge to see whats going on.

(8,570 posts)Would probably be okay. But I think they have to be started as kittens with those new backpacks that have mesh windows fir the kitties to watch through. And the pet strollers.

(28,074 posts)don't give a flying fuck is anyone is allergic, so why should a cat owner care? If you're allergic, that's your problem, not mine.

(4 posts)Dog owners should not be allowed to take their dogs everywhere with them, and neither should cat owners.
Allergens float through the air, and sitting on the other side of the car may not be enough to avoid triggering an allergic reaction.
As someone with allergies to both cats and dogs, I would appreciate it if people left their pets at home.

(28,074 posts)I'm a huge cat-lover, have two of my own, but they stay home. I don't assume everyone adores my cats as much as I do.

(56,454 posts)no need for pet to be present. if you are that allergic, you need to protect yourself regardless of whether the animal is actually in the "room."

(26,985 posts)I inherited a cat belonging to my sister when she died. Going through airport security in Louisville, they made me take him out of the crate, to check for bombs inside the crate (I guess.) I said, if he gets loose, you're going to be the ones chasing him all over this airport. He bit me, even though the vet had already sedated him for me. But he rode like a trooper between my feet all the way to Calif, with two layovers.
We got to be good buddies. Can't say the same for the cat I inherited from my mother.

(4,026 posts)Never let them put your pet's carrier in an overhead bin.
Personally, I would feel terrible if my pet got away on the subway or train. I might have some luck catching a dog, but a panicked cat? There's no chance. I guess for allergies we need to have pet free cars on the subway. I know some people could die if a bag of peanuts was opened by someone near them. It's a very difficult problem.
