They're Monarchs! We planted a bunch of wildflower seeds this spring, but none of the milkweed plants grew. Next spring we'll try milkweed again and increase the number of dill plants.
BTW, he doesn't use any pesticides around the garden or flower beds, so no worries there.

Well, the swallowtails are beautiful, as well.
Maybe we'll have better luck with milkweed next year. I have seen a couple of Monarchs around his house out in the country this summer, but none at my place in town.

(18,899 posts)The goldenrod is "native" to my area. But not well-behaved, sigh.
Still, I have lots of milkweed and I have seen many caterpillars and eggs this year.

(133 posts)and surprisingly, the caterpillars were also on celery we were growing. I have since given up on vegetable gardening, but we plant wildflower seeds in the beds now. This year, we had two monarchs, one swallowtail, a couple hummingbirds, and a few bumblebees. (I'm in Connecticut). Pretty disappointing compared to what I remember not just when I was young, but as recent as 15 years ago. I want to try milkweed, but hubby is concerned about its invasiveness. I'll get my way

(443 posts)Swamp milkweed and the orange butterfly milkweed do not do that and can be easily managed in a garden.
