Coventina's History Thread: Paper Part III!

The art of paper making remained in Asia for several centuries, spreading to Korea and Japan. Around 1000 CE, paper making reached the Middle East. Arabians used linen fibers in place of wood pulp, creating a high-quality paper. These superior products were in high demand, and exports increased. In this way, the art of paper making reached Europe and flourished - particularly in Italy - by the 13th century.

The Italians took their paper making very seriously, using machinery and standardized processes to turn out large amounts of top-notch paper. They used water power to run paper mills, created higher-quality during screens, and improved the sizing process. A new coating was also developed to improve paper strength and reduce water absorbancy.
