I went twice, each on a Sat (what I could afford) by Amtrack from NYC down to Baltimore, and Phillidelphia two years later.
Oh, I had such fun, between the Panels, the Vendors's Hall, and the the cities vying for a Future Wirld Con. In fact at Baltimore I voted for Phillidelphia.
At Baltimore I think JMS (Babylon 5, , comics, later Sense8) was supposed to be GOH. But he had (or recovering from) pneumonia. Luckily he did do a phone in.
And David Brin one of my favorite authors (The Uplift Universe, and Existence) was on a 3 author's panel.
I ran into an acquaintance who'd became a fantasy author. I think I might have run into someone else I knew. I remember an exchange of notes on the physical Buliltine Board.
And then there was the Art Hall. Omg, as an artist - it was swoon worthy! 🥰
Especially seeing some of my favorite SF Illustrators' original artworks from their book covers! Plus anyone else's cool works new to me!
I wore an extra home made badge with my own art on it.
I still have the official magazine, and the shedule booklet for each show!
The only sad thing post convention was Philadelphia was in 2001.
9-11 totally took over my focus for a time. Totally forgot about Phillidelphia WC untill weeks, even months later when I ran into my Con materials in a drawer.
I do wish but I know it's a money issue that we have a SF/F World Con in NYC.
Just freaking once for Life's sake like in the next 5-ish years!!!
Saving on travel fare I could actually go for a Sat AND Sun!
😑 😔 Le sigh!

(5,011 posts)It was very small but every bit as fun as what you described. Tim Powers, George RR Martin, Bruce Stirling, Diana Gabaldon, Diana Rowland, and Connie Willis were some of the attendees.

I went to, hmmm, ?Philcon 50 in 86. Met Illustrator Michael Whelan there!
Also to 1 or 2 cons in Tarrytown NYS, 2 in Stonybrook University in Long Island. What a looong train ride.
So I had gone to these a bunch of years before hand.
I decided a World Con had to be at least as much, if not more fun bc of way more panels, vendors, and artists! I'd say it was more fun bc of those reasons.
I did check out who'd be the GOH, Artist guest, any announced special panels to see if it was worth going. 👍
The only one that was actually disappointing was my very first one- at Columbia University. Not far from me!
But I figured I had to try again, and I did. Had much better times. 👍
