But this is why it is so expensive. The flower is a fall blooming crocus. I grew them at one of my houses years ago.

(8,544 posts)Pick up a spice mix called Spike and mix the saffron in with that and make some roasted potatoes with it. That's my favorite way of using it. I also liked it in cream of chicken soup. Don't use a lot of it, just one or two threads ( stigmas) smashed with a mortar and pestle.

The original Spike years ago used to have saffron in it. When they stopped to cut costs ( thinking no one would miss it) I got the bulbs and grew my own because it was the saffron in the mix that made it so good.

(17,458 posts)picking up saffron at Wal-Mart because I was sure they wouldn't carry it. The Wal-Mart I go to is very proletarian. But there are better grocery stores around here. I'll check with them. Thanks for the idea!

Probably the same thing here. If people will pay that much, why flood the market and remove the profits?
