Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI have a bone to pick with Wednesday Season 2.
Almost finished the four episode mini-season, but I had to pitch in when Wednesday's grandmother appeared in a scene. It's Joanna Lumley. She's a British actress who I'm sure is renown in her part of the world, but how can she be Morticia's mother and still maintain the mystic of a Spanish gothic family origin? There is no indication she has any influence of Spanish culture.
I kind of feel like there was an effort to anglicize the role.

(15,747 posts)I've love her in Absolutely Fabulous for ages.
That said, wasn't the Mom or Auntie in earlier Addams movies Carol Kane?

(50,911 posts)Joanne Lumley is playing the role like an English Dame.
Also, Carol Kane played the role in 1993, when ethnic backgrounds would have been white washed. I would like to believe we have come a long way since then.

(5,776 posts)I recall in original TV show her witchy origins were mentioned as being passed down from ancestry going back to Salem Mass.
In all previous shows and movies she was not Hispanic and her mother was always portrayed as Anglo while Gomez had the Spanish background.

(50,911 posts)The only thing that anyone is sure of is that the character of Gomez was Spanish in the early movies, but with the Burton Wednesday, probably Mexican because of the reference to Dia de los Muertos. The Spanish do not celebrate it. It's a Mexican observance. Jennifer Ortega is Puerto Rican and Mexican.
I will concede that Morticia is not Spanish, but not convinced her originations are from Salem. Maybe Tim Burton can give further clarity in the character in the on-going seasons.
