I know the fireworks are coming. Last night he hid in the kitchen. I could not hear anything going off, but his ears are a lot better than mine. Its a rough time of year for a lot of pets.

(38,187 posts)away started Saturday night and no doubt will go on Friday and Saturday this week. These aren't your normal fireworks they are like a professional show. They have to spend thousands, I enjoy the show but I have no pets.

(4,301 posts)I'm not sure if they actually feel any safer, but they do hang out in them during the 4th. We give them treats and pets, and honestly, the booming rattles our nerves as much as theirs!

(916 posts)I like fireworks, but not firecrackers. They're so loud and disturbing and those that set them off don't know when to quit. I'm not looking forward to this weekend at all.

(73,779 posts)After spending 2 summers consulting on the decommissioning/decontamination an arsenal, firecrackers are not thrilling in any way.
Set off a pit of thirty 105mm rifle shells all at once just once and firecrackers are just silly, dangerous toys.

(12,570 posts)This year I went to vet and got sedatives.
Hoping they don't set off in morning because we are going to parade at liberal college town. Need some fun it's been such depressing news lately.

(73,779 posts)Vincent didn't respond badly the last couple years (He's only 3)
But, we had dogs that were panting wrecks.
To make matters worse, 15-20 years back we had a lunatic neighbor who set off bottlerockets, mortars & screamers on the 4th, plus or minus 4 days.
Drove our dog Walter nuts.

(73,779 posts)...200 bottlerockets and a hundred mortars during a drought!
Scorched grass and bushes in every yard in the neighborhood!
Every morning I was out there picking up fireworks carcasses for a full week.
I actively wished he'd do something drunk & stupid to hurt himself.

(21,418 posts)But residential areas are not the place. And I wish they would limit the time to one week - otherwise it tends to go for 3-4 weeks, any time of day.
And they are dangerous. People lose hands, eyes, fingers, etc. every year.

(21,418 posts)He was a dad shooting off fireworks to show his kids on the 4th of July. He went to the ER with the "pieces" but they couldn't put it back together again. He told his story to the newspaper and they have reprinted it several times.

(21,386 posts)We had to keep him in the house if we shot them off. We only got fireworks that one year. My Mom had a place beside ours and she had a St. Bernard that had seizures if there was noise. So we never got in the habit.
Except for that one dog, the other pets we had were scared silly.

(174 posts)Call the vets - let them help. And white noise if possible: tv, fans, stereo...

(21,418 posts)He also has a crate and trazadone. But usually I don't resort to these until the noise starts. This morning I ran into a neighbor whose dog doesn't want to go outside at all. The dogs seem to be in fear of something we can't detect yet.
