Just got a call from the surgeon that my wife of 37 years did well with hip replacement surgery..

Sharing that with you guys because:

A. We can use all the good news we can get;

and

B, I'm sitting here by myself in the hospital cafe eating Cheetos by myself.

Hope she's good for another 37 years; I'll check the warranty.

My daughter is a physical therapist and she says hip replacements are not as bad as knee replacements. Use a cane or walker until you are comfortable walking without. Be mindful of every step and where you are placing your foot as you walk.

From my 2 experiences w PT
•left shoulder [ripped rotators] in my late 30's (and Im a lefty)
•tri-frsctured right ankle [got metal] in late 50's

If she does her PT about 96% of the time she should have excellent results. A little slack off allowed, but that's it.

Good Luck!

Had my right hip replaced four years ago. Use a walker for a few days. Then go to a cane. Then quickly toss it and start walking and ASAP bicycling. I rewarded myself by growing a beard. Don't stop...this is a long-term recovery. Hardest part was getting my golf swing back. Just didn't feel right for the longest time. I eventually changed my swing (for the better) and am now on track.

I'm going to read your reply directly to her, it's like you know her. She's really just getting started on her recovery, but already frustrated about toddling around the house with the walker. She will be delighted with just the idea of using a cane instead.

We've spent a lot of time on the regular bikes; my brilliant idea about that is to get her an electric bike, maybe get her out on the road faster. I'm not telling her that part, her birthday is next week.

Wed Apr 23, 2025, 01:43 PM

First, did the surgeon use the anterior or posterior approach? Mine used the posterior approach, partly because of a congenital hip abnormality and partly because it's what he's more experienced at. This approach slows the recovery time, but the outcome ends up being just as good.

Second, does she have any conditions that would make her recovery slower than usual?

I know one person who had the anterior approach who was walking on the beach with no walking aids within a few days. It took me over a month to ditch the cane, but again, I have an abnormality that slowed my recovery.

However long it takes, she'll be happy she had it done!

It has been recommended that my wife increase her protein intake during her recuperation.

So, even though we don't eat much beef, we decided that tonight we're going with the Applebee's $9.99 burger special.

Of course, I'm going for the bacon cheese version because, oh, reasons.
