The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsEver check in on the people on your DU "ignore list?"
I used to get in a lot of trouble around here until I realized that whenever I want to go over the line - and often I do - the "ignore" button is my friend.
Every once in a while though, I go to my ignore list through "My DU" and click on the people on it to check on their "Chance of Serving On Juries" which is a defacto register of how problematic some of us - myself included - are.
It's a guilty little puerile thing I do; I should really grow up, but maybe I'm too old to grow up.
This said, it seems my anti-friends here are getting in a certain amount of trouble themselves, some zero percenters here and there. I'd recommend the "ignore list" to them, but well, we're not friends and not in communication. Others seem to have just gone away. (I've been here a long time.)
The ignore list and the jury system are features that make DU the best liberal site there is. Kudos to the admins/owners!

(35,625 posts)...to be generous and tolerant, but don't always succeed, because let's face it, there is some obnoxious stuff that the rules are well designed to address.
You cannot be called, as I understand it, to act on a jury for someone on your ignore list, so my anti-friends cannot blame me if they're getting in trouble.
I try to avoid alerting, except in clearly egregious cases.

(3,103 posts)Was thinking about arrogance.
There is an unavoidable military bragadaccio, even in the less militarized and there is an intellectual pomposity that really troubles those who miss that it is not pompous, but fact.

(54,817 posts)It's not as if only the posts are ignored. You end up silently missing many other posts. (I have tested this with momentary Ignores.) I think it used to be that individual posts would be Ignored and you'd see the rest of a subthread and just a marker of some kind to let you know a post or two was Ignored. Now you have to notice that there numbers missing in the titles summary of a thread or that there seem to be fewer posts than the count.
I have not needed to Ignore people. I am able to handle them via replies or get over them without difficulty. There are people who resolutely oppose some of my positions and others (some overlap) who I think should study up on logic and reasoning, but my basic approach is to keep bringing it back to logic and facts and let them reveal their deficits to the readers.
The DU system is remarkably effective overall and part of the reason there is such loyalty and long term participation by such a large number of members.

(54,817 posts)In the old days if I was told by a member that they were ignoring me, I'd engineer my replies such that the gaps in their threads would be intriguing and obvious and sometimes it they would make mistakes when not Ignoring would have prevented it. Tweaking their noses was a bit "puerile", to use your word

(35,625 posts)I've done this from time to time when confronted by your strategy, just out of a sense of morbid curiousity.
Almost all of the time, I think of the wisdom of the ignore list and ignore the sub thread; in any case others are doing what I would have done, albeit less offensively. If I find something that offends my senses and which may inspire the generation of a response, a somewhat rare event, I can always create a new thread of commentary on the offensive thing expressed by my unfriend.
Here's an example of such a thread in response to an "ignoree" who claimed, that giant wind turbines were more sustainable than small wind turbines, a nonsense claim:
A Commentary on Failure, Delusion and Faith: Danish Data on Big Wind Turbines and Their Lifetimes.

(109,233 posts)Someone on it for a few days or so. When I have had a half dozen blocked, I usually find that they have been permanently "departed" when I remember to check in six months or so...
But, it can be a helpful feature when we enter one of those controversy-driven periods. Right now, Trump and his ilk pretty much have most of us united against them rather than each other. So, I guess there is that.

(10,309 posts)is kinda long, but it's made up mostly of name callers. If you ever called me a concern troll for worrying that Trump would win, you are probably on it. Also, The Edward Snowden affair got a lot of people ignored. Can't even remember what the problem was.

(72,378 posts)I've never used the Ignore feature. I can remember the few people I found so annoying that I could ignore the posts from them without any automation help.
It's quite a small number anyway, so it's not like I'm remembering 20 posters. Just a handful & most of them are long gone.

(35,625 posts)...of five or so people on the list of 52 people currently on it. I went through it; two have had posting procedures revoked; one is flagged for review. About half of them apparently haven't posted in years.
A fair number of have been dinged a number of times, a few multiple times.
Most of them I can't recall how or why they ended up on "ignore;" probably I wanted to express what I thought of them, and thought better of it.
I envy you for your balanced view and higher level of tolerance.
Unfortunately I can be unable to contain anger. The good thing is that I know it.
It's childish, I know but the technical tool of the "ignore" button is one I actually appreciate. Some of us need it.

One of them has over 2000!!!! Posts in 90 days! Super tired of seeing that poster on main page and trending but that does happen when people are controversial I guess.
One likes to hear themselves talk I am very sure of that and calls themself a writer and is super egotistical
Ill stop there! Lol.
I am sure I am on a couple ignore lists because I dont back down! (Tom Petty)

My first interaction with them, right out of they gate they basically said that I was stupid. I didn't read their comment any further and immediately placed them on my full ignore list.
They say that voting has consequences but so does treating others badly.

(49,920 posts)My ignore list is yooge. At times I'm blunt. Etiquette is not my strong suit.
The ignore list and jury system are a way of defusing conflict in a democratic way, which is what you do in a pluralistic society. Tolerate. There are things worth fighting over, but most things are not.
People get SCOTUS cases over religion in cakes. If they'd start baking the Devil in there the legal profession would have a payday. I don't know why this doesn't happen. But I can't get worked up over it. Probably they won't agree with me, and the sun will come up tomorrow either way, and breakfast will be on the table.

(10,515 posts)Most that I have set on my ignore list have been FFR'ed (flagged for review) or PPR'ed (posting privileges revoked).
I like the fact that we all have our own thoughts, feelings and perspectives.
There is a civil way to address people and then there are condescending, uncivilized and toxic people here on DU. I have zero tolerance for the later. We on DU should act like we're all the same team because we are.
I don't believe that putting people where they belong is considered immature. I believe it's a necessary tool to use in both in person interaction and on the internet.
I treat toxic people as they should be treated. Nonexistent.
