Sometimes they seem to know that their tails are part of them, as in when they purposefully reach out to grab them so they can groom them.

Other times, they will suddenly take note of their tails swishing back and forth behind them, and react with surprise or alarm, as if to say, "What the hell is THAT thing behind me?"
