America is bracing for political violence -- and a significant portion think it's sometimes OK
Most Americans expect political violence to keep growing in the United States and believe that it is likely a political candidate will be assassinated in the next few years.
Widespread pessimism about political violence is a rare, grim point of consensus in a country riven by political and cultural divisions.
A majority of Americans, 55 percent, expect political violence to increase, according to a new poll from POLITICO and Public First. That figure underscores just how much the spate of attacks from the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk earlier this year to the attempts on President Donald Trumps life in 2024 have rattled the nation.
Its a view held by majorities of Americans all across lines like gender, age, party affiliation and level of education, though Democrats and older voters expressed particular concern.
Perhaps most troubling, a significant minority of the population 24 percent believes that there are some instances where violence is justified.
There was little partisan divide in that belief, but a strong generational one: Younger Americans were significantly more likely than older ones to say violence can be justified. More than one in three Americans under the age of 45 agreed with that belief.

This is depressing...but sadly, I agree.

(6,978 posts)The Magas are not going back under their rocks without a fight. I'm not surprised that the younger generations are the ones who most say that violence can be justified. We did, too, back in the days of the Viet Nam. The majority of us tried to do peaceful protests, but one has to consider whether they actually got as much traction back then as the more violent outbursts of that age. Youth see themselves as invincible; they're not, they just can see anything else in relation to themselves and their friends. That's why we elders who have stood in their shoes before should stand ready to support and offer guidance, but also to get out of the way. I noticed that in the No Kings march I last participated in. Those of us who were older (and there was a huge number of us), tended to move towards the sides of the sidewalk; the younger ones marched on through us. We couldn't keep up with them; but we could hold our own, bringing up the sides and the rear... the areas of support. That was just my perception, anyway...

He was tacitly encouraging violence even in the Tea Party days. Now it's out in the open. Shitler and his Gestapo are something to fight against!

My two women's clubs? One has a sweet spot of mid 30's . . . the other leans heavily 50 and older.
So in that sub population - we are prepared to defend ourselves. Not just from the magpub regime - but from their useful idiots down the street.

(29,850 posts)Violence can be justified, especially when used in self-defense. Like when the government removes all the social safety nets, turns the military loose on opposition party cities, sends troops to "maintain election security" when in fact they're being deployed to intimidate voters in blue states, etc., etc., etc.

It's hard for younger people to relate to the "let's be peaceful" boomers, because many are in worse straits financially than their parents at this point. It will only accelerate as options become slimmer. How will people react when Trump cheats again, or simply cancels elections? If there is no legal way to affect change, there are those who will find a way. They are obviously much more likely to be young & feel like they have nothing to lose.
