Trauma surgeon recounts church school shooting that injured 21, killed 2

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (WCCO) – Five children arrived almost simultaneously by ambulance to the Children’s Hospital in Minneapolis, Minnesota, after a gunman opened fire on Annunciation Catholic School last month.

Each child arrived alone – none accompanied by an adult. Doctors, nurses and trained social workers met with each small patient to help explain to them what was going on.

Valusek said the wounds she saw were significant, coming from a semi-automatic weapon.

“Higher velocity is definitely a big deal that is much harder to deal with because those are the ones that will scatter and fracture and go multiple directions,” Valusek said.

Many of the children were so close to being more severely injured. Valusek said millimeters made a difference for some of the children and her decision of whether they needed to be taken into surgery immediately or not.

“I was honestly angry. I was angry because my first thought when we got that page that day was, ‘This isn’t going to be a single gunshot wound patient,’” Valusek said. “And my second thought that days was, ‘We knew this would happen to us someday. How do we live in a society where we knew this would happen to us someday?’”
