GOP leaders won't help Massie's bid for reelection as Trump plots his ouster

(CNN) President Donald Trump and his top political advisers are plotting an aggressive push to oust one of his most persistent Republican adversaries: Rep. Thomas Massie.

And House GOP leaders won’t stand in Trump’s way.

Speaker Mike Johnson and his leadership team are sending their clearest signals to date that their conservative colleague will have to fend for himself as Trump’s allies prepare to dump millions into Massie’s district to purge him from the Northeastern Kentucky district he’s represented for nearly 13 years. In interviews with CNN, five members of House GOP leadership declined to offer their backing for Massie’s reelection bid – and Johnson would not say if he’d support his colleague.

Instead, the speaker admonished Massie for undercutting his party’s agenda – as the libertarian-minded Republican intensifies his furious battle to force the release of the Jeffrey Epstein files and derides Trump’s signature domestic policy achievement for driving up the national debt.

"The speaker admonished Massie for undercutting his party's agenda," the Epstein cover up.

For years, Donald Trump has described a scenario that’s automatic: The president tells GOP primary voters who to vote for, and they obey his directions. It’s a particular point of pride for the Republican, one he emphasized during his latest radio interview on “The Scott Jennings Show.” He boasted:

I do bring a unity to the Republican Party. Do you know, almost every single person I’ve endorsed has won? I can’t think of anyone who hasn’t. If I endorse a person, they win. ... With the Republican Party, it’s like, 399-0. Think of that.

It would certainly be impressive if that were true. But it’s not even close to being true.

Around this time last year, for example, he backed a candidate in the Republicans’ U.S. Senate primary in New Jersey. She lost. Soon after, despite the former president’s confidence in the potency of his support, his choice in Indiana’s lieutenant governor’s race also flopped. Soon after, Trump-backed candidates also lost in Utah’s U.S. Senate primary, as well as GOP congressional primaries in Colorado and South Carolina.
