Trump’s effort to weaponize mortgage fraud claims could ensnare his allies

President Donald Trump and his team seem to think they’ve landed on a silver bullet in their quest to target his enemies and expand his power: alleged mortgage fraud.

In two instances now, the Trump administration has used this allegation to investigate a prominent Democrat who once probed Trump – New York Attorney General Letitia James and California Sen. Adam Schiff.

These allegations now form a large share of the administration’s known legal claims against their perceived political enemies, although no criminal charges have been brought against any of them.

But there are also examples of several prominent Republicans facing similar questions, which underscores how selective and self-serving Trump’s attacks on his foes appear. If the president and his administration press forward, it could turn into a slippery slope.
