David Sirota: From The Lever's reader supported newsroom, this is lever time. I'm David Sirota. President Donald Trump has a problem. If election trends continue the way they're going after Trump rammed his unpopular tax bill through Congress, then his party is gonna lose its slim majority in the US house. So Trump is trying to rig the election map by redrawing congressional districts so that they favor Republicans.
Ground zero is Republican controlled Texas, where Trump's allies are trying to take an already gerrymandered congressional map and gerrymander it some more to squeeze out five more Republican seats. California Democrats have responded with a plan to retaliate. With a new, more democratic map of their own in their state.
Today on Lever Time, we're talking to the Texas congressman, caught in the middle of this escalating war, a progressive populist democratic lawmaker who Republicans have been targeting for decades. They now have Congressman Lloyd Doggett in quite a bind if their gerrymandering plan passes. Doggett has to choose whether to run in a primary against one of his own party's younger rising stars.
