Analysis 'He has trouble completing a thought': bizarre public appearances again cast doubt on Trump's mental acuity

Donald Trump’s frequently bizarre public appearances, which this month have seen the president claim, wrongly, that his uncle knew the Unabomber and rant unprompted about windmills on his recent trip to the UK, have once again raised questions about his mental acuity, experts say.

For more than a year Trump, 79, has exhibited odd behavior at campaign events, in interviews, in his spontaneous remarks and at press conferences. The president repeatedly drifts off topic, including during a cabinet meeting this month when he spent 15 minutes talking about decorating, and appears to misremember simple facts about his government and his life.

(snip)

Over the weekend Trump, during a meeting with the European Commission president, Ursula von der Leyen, abruptly switched from discussing immigration to saying this: “The other thing I say to Europe: we’ve – we will not allow a windmill to be built in the United States. They’re killing us. They’re killing the beauty of our scenery.”

(snip)

The abrupt changes in conversation are an example of Trump “digressing without thinking – he’ll just switch topics without self-regulation, without having a coherent narrative”, said Harry Segal, a senior lecturer in the psychology department at Cornell University and in the psychiatry department at Weill Cornell Medicine.

can be discounted in determining competency.

His believers grow accustomed to discounting the content of his message in favor of its' style, and will only hear what they want to hear. Praising a fictional cannibal just means *rump is a regular type person; who has seen the same movie they have while they ignore his belief that Hannibal Lecter was a real person.

but I have to say I really thought many of them would have woken up before now. Everything he does and says is so in-your-face all the time, as if he is intentionally pushing his luck to see how far he can go before they desert him.

I think he is programmed for failure and much of what he does is self sabotage. Then when he fails, he can play the victim.

8. Desensitization...
Sun Aug 3, 2025, 12:26 PM

Desensitization (from Latin "de-" meaning "removal" and "sensus" meaning "feeling" or "perception&quot is a psychology term related to a treatment or process that diminishes emotional responsiveness to a negative or aversive stimulus after repeated exposure. This process typically occurs when an emotional response is repeatedly triggered, but the action tendency associated with the emotion proves irrelevant or unnecessary.
...
Psychologist Mary Cover Jones pioneered early desensitization techniques to help individuals "unlearn" (disassociate from) phobias[1] and anxieties.[2][3][4][5] Her work laid the foundation for later structured approaches to desensitization therapy, aimed at gradually reducing emotional reactions to previously distressing situations.
...
Desensitization also refers to the potential for reduced responsiveness to actual violence caused by exposure to violence in the media. However, this topic is debated in the scientific literature.[29] Desensitization may arise from different media sources, including TV, video games, and movies. Some scholars suggest that violence may prime thoughts of hostility, possibly affecting how we perceive others and interpret their actions.[30][31][32] Desensitization has been shown to lower arousal to violent scenes in heavy versus light television viewers at the physiological level.[33] It has frequently been suggested that those who commit extreme violence have blunted sensibilities as a result of watching violent videos repeatedly.[33] Desensitization to violence has been linked to a number of outcomes.[5] It has been observed, for example, as less arousal and emotional disturbance when witnessing violence, as greater hesitancy to call an adult to intervene in a witnessed physical altercation, and as less sympathy for victims of domestic abuse.[5] Recent school shootings have sparked a lot of discussion about the desensitizing effects of violent video games and the possible involvement of "shooter" games, which teach gun handling skills and provide intense desensitization training.[5]

Could also indicate a combination of: 1) poor education and 2) not giving a shit.

It takes considerable effort and practice to speak or write well. A Ulysses style stream of consciousness indicates indifference, which fits Trump.

My dad has an anecdote about a woman who ends her letters with “Sorry about the long letter, I didn’t have time to write a short one.”

Brief, precise communiques are difficult. Driveling on about the Unabomber, windmills and sharks is easy.

I get Trump ;-/.

10. Trump is most likely already suffering from Alzheimer's.

Most sufferers have lucid moments and instances of speech that makes no sense within the context of what is being discussed. Trump is now at or close to the age when his father began showing symptoms. Fred Trump was officially diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 1991 at age 86, but he began showing symptoms several years before that diagnosis. Dementia runs in Trump's family. His paternal uncle, John G. Trump had Alzheimer’s and died at age 78. Last year, Trump’s nephew said that one of Trump’s cousins had Alzheimer’s, as did his sister Maryanne Trump Barry, who died at age 86.

Trump is now 79 and his partying and probable drug lifestyle as a younger man may have aged him faster than his relatives. Given what we’ve seen already, he is unlikely to finish his term without being in full-blown dementia. And given the subservience of the Republican Party, they will do nothing about it.

They don't give a shit as long as they can maintain their tax cuts to the rich and fleecing of the middle class.

The oligarchs don't need him so much anymore as their tax cuts have been passed and the part of MAGA that's actually offended by sex trafficking and pedophilia see him now as part of the problem.

Those dynamics make his increasing mental deterioration all the more vulnerable for him even among his own base.
