Dr. Mehmet Oz, President Donald Trumps Administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, declared that the administration will no longer tolerate what he called a culture that makes it easy to be sick in America. Framing childhood illness as a failure of parenting and physical activity rather than medical need, Oz linked obesity to national security and warned that industries would be forced to cooperateor face government retaliation.
Ozoften called a conspiracy theorist who has been widely criticized for promoting quack productsappeared to endorse an authoritarian vision of public health, suggesting that under Trump and Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Americans would no longer be allowed to remain sick without consequences, and threatened industry with demands to either cooperate or face retribution.
He also railed against what he called the over-medicalization of American societyparticularly among childrenbut failed to distinguish between conditions driven by behavior and those rooted in biology or beyond individual control. Youre diagnosing problems that probably should be dealt with with the parents, he told Fox News Business, referring to childrens health, or by going out and playing, or just dealing with issues and teaching kids how to mental resilience [sic].
He warned of risk factors that cause an obesity epidemic that now prevents three quarters of young men from entering the military, a questionable claim, and said that this crisis is rolling up towards the older ages. Theres a reason were twice as obese as [our] European counterpart countries, were ten times more obese than Japan: weve made it easy to be sick in America. And this president and this Secretary of Health, Bobby Kennedy, theyre not going to tolerate it anymore, Oz declared. Warning that he and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Dr. Marty Makary, are the tip of the spear, he threatened to make sure that we get industry to work with us, or well be coming after them.

I wish for him a rare, painful, incurable disease.

(15,567 posts)THAT's what medicine was like in the 70's-80's... they knew lots less, so the blanket diagnosis was "anemia" that's like now calling the blanket of autoimmune stuff they CAN'T diagnose as fibromyalgia...
If it wasn't for the shot I take once a month, that is biologically made to target the specific genes that activate my illness... I wouldn't be in remission. (btw - those shots are $10K each! good thing I'm "milking the system" on medicaid)
I am worried I'm going to have to start staggering my doses to have a little stockpile when things hit the fan... I can probably get by for about 6 months before things get bad again...then I'd just want to off myself.
I believe in holsitic medicine too, don;t get me wrong... but there's a place for modern medicine
And children deserve to be heard and seen when they have illness and other issues... obesity isn't a moral failure, it's usually a combination of things.
