The Israeli Reservists Generation of Victory organization said that it will provide the two IDF Givati Brigade soldiers, who were arrested in Belgium at the request of the pro-Palestinian organization Hind Rajab Foundation, with international legal aid in a Monday statement.
Two IDF soldiers were arrested and interrogated by Belgian authorities following a complaint filed by the Hind Rajab Foundation, an anti-Israel legal organization focused on pursuing legal action against IDF soldiers. They were later released after the investigation.
The soldiers, who attended the Tomorrowland music festival, were alleged to have participated in war crimes, according to HRF. The legal complaint was filed by HRF and the Global Legal Action Network (GLAN).

Legal action groups hail arrest of two soldiers as a 'breakthrough' in accountability efforts for Gaza atrocities

"I think we will now see a domino effect across Europe and around the world," she told MEE, explaining that the accusations brought against the two soldiers include the use of human shields and wanton destruction.
The evidence was collected from the soldiers' own social media feed.
"One of them posted videos of his unit blowing up property in Gaza and Lebanon," said Minogue.

In light of this possible jurisdiction, the Federal Prosecutors Office instructed the police to locate the two individuals mentioned in the complaint and to proceed with their questioning. After the interviews, they were released, it said, adding that no further information will be provided at this stage of the investigation.

The United States shielded George W. Bush from war crimes, which was a huge mistake. Democracies do not die from one action alone, but a series of corruption that we normalize.

Beastly Boy
(13,171 posts)It probably is, but in a very ominous way.

(3,383 posts)The issues before the Israeli government around the globe will witness more legal actions for accountability, even if it is through the IDF and not Bibi, himself.
Unfortunately, the U.S. is not an example of adhering to the rules of war, either. We "tortured some folks". Then we let the architects get away with it.
Beastly Boy
(13,171 posts)Both have been conscripted to IDF on a compulsory basis.
They traveled to Belgium as citizens of a state from which Belgium has not restricted entry. As tourists, they don't represent the interess of their government.
Your suggestion that this abuse of process is likely to be repeated in other countries is proof positive of the ominous nature of this arrest and detention.

Sorry, but that is a problem for the IDF and they know it.
Beastly Boy
(13,171 posts)And the petitioners, who probably understood it too, presented no grounds to believe the arrested Israelis are legally responsible for anything. Not even their service in wartime.
It is the arbitrary nature of the petition that is the ominous part in their abuse of process.

(13,171 posts)According to the federal Prosecutor of Belgium, officials who investigated the complaint filed by Hind Rajab briefly detained the two individuals for questioning and released them. They provided no further comments.
Whether "further action" refers to the investigation into the alleged conduct of the two Israelis, or whether it refers to investigating the legitimacy of the complaint, is not clear at this point.

From the cited article: The arrests came on the same day Belgiums King Philippe described the situation in Gaza as a disgrace to humanity. He said in speech on Sunday that Belgium backs calls by the UN for an immediate end to this unbearable crisis.

Beastly Boy
(13,171 posts)And their petition is directed at two individuals who have not been shown by the petitioner to be part of any objectionable, let alone plausibly illegal actions.
And with due deference to King of Belgium, he is not a party to this investigation. At least not at this point, as per Belgium's prosecutor's office.

(3,383 posts)Why are they giving any credence to it? Read the Kings statement again.
Have a good day.
Beastly Boy
(13,171 posts)And so far there are no signs that the Belgium Prosecutor's office is giving any credence to Hind Rajab's petition. They released the two Israelis just a couple of hours after their detention, didn't they?
And please, don't drag the King of Belgium into this. He seems like a nice guy, and he has better things to do than to insert himself into frivolous petitions.
