Democratic Voters Who Skipped 2024 Election Want Candidates Like Bernie, AOC

“The conventional wisdom is really wrong on these voters,” says pollster Celinda Lake. “They want leaders who will fight for everyone”

“The conventional wisdom is really wrong on these voters,” Lake tells Rolling Stone. “They’re very clear about what they want and what they thought was missing in 2024: They want leaders who will fight for everyone… They’re very health care-oriented…They want to crack down on Big Pharma… They’re very populist. They have a clear economic agenda around affordability and making the wealthy pay what they owe in taxes.”

Perhaps most critically, Lake adds: “You can’t get these voters by just being against things. You have to be for something… You have to be offering solutions… And you have to be standing up and fighting.”

Previously publicized voter file data indicated that millions of voters who cast votes for Biden in 2020 failed to appear at the polls to back his vice president four years later. Lake Research Partners polled 822 registered voters in battleground states who matched that profile, and what they found was that those voters are more liberal, and more plugged into the news, than many of the loudest pundits and prognosticators have assumed.

Ancona notes these voters’ “top issue is affordable health care,” so Democrats should have a “golden opportunity” right now. Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill,” signed into law on July 4, will once again slash taxes for the ultra-wealthy, and do so while punishing the poor. Roughly 17 million Americans are expected to lose their health insurance as a result of the law, combined with Republicans’ refusal to extend subsidies for marketplace coverage.

Democrats are supposed to fight for the masses. Sternly-worded letters don't impress anyone.

I agree with you that its tough to win elections if you dont have anything convincingly better to sell than the opposition. But "I'll take a dictator because this sandwich wasn't made 3 seconds ago" is also kinda dumb.

Good candidates that are electable. Bernie has always been blah blah blah. What major bills does he have?

He used to always say millionaires and billionaires this and that. Now that he's a millionaire he conveniently dropped the millionaire part.

He misses a lot of votes as well.

I think it's a republican bugaboo put out there to discourage us, and the democrats don't say anything against it because, why not? Make the voters both the victims and the ones who victimized each other.

No... no one will ever convince me this election was stolen outright by tech hanky panky. No conspiracy theory...

And while people like us progressives have legitimate beefs with centrist democrats, we're not so dumb as to not vote. But we ARE getting damned tired of everyone telling us everything is all OUR fault, and that are concerns are just not top priorities. We've been putting up with that for decades, and now look... women, POC, and non-CIS people are less than 2nd class citizens. WE aren't the privileged crowd of first world status who mucked things up. WE are the ones trying to get us out of the muck! And I fear, thus it will be until "regular" centrist democrats and third way democrats stop demeaning us.

Well, I want 'voters' who will fight vote for the greater good of everyone . VOTING MATTERS, even if the candidate is not the perfect fit and you have to hold your damn nose to vote then do it!

"Oh... look at me... I can't vote for the Democrat because she's not "for" something and only "against" fascism." GMAFB!

It's an outright lie to say that Democrats do not offer solutions. Did anyone bother to read the Democratic platform... or to listen to what was being said?? Please. This is absurd.

self-anointed opinions.

I wonder how many of those folks refused to vote for the Democratic nominee in 2016 or 2024?

The fact is THIS, anyone who refused to vote for the Democratic nominee in 2016 or 2024 by either NOT VOTING, or voting third party, was a vote for trump.

Everyone knew what the stakes were, and THAT INCLUDED THE SUPREME COURT.

I am so tired of these sorry excuses, including those who were so vocal and proud in 2016 about refusing to vote for the Democratic candidate, and because of that we lost every swing state along with the supreme court, yet even today those folks still have no regrets for their actions.

So what we don't need right now is another divisive editorial saying my way or the highway, especially NOW.

It is too bad that the editorial writer didn't bother to even listen to what VP Harris was saying.

I guess the Rolling Stone found their replacement for anti-Democratic misogynistic Matt Taibbi.
