President Trump says tariffs on China will 'come down substantially'

(USA Today) WASHINGTON ― President Donald Trump said the 145% tariffs he imposed on Chinese imports will eventually "come down substantially" as he expressed optimism about future talks to reach a U.S.-China trade deal.

Trump's remarks Tuesday to reporters in the Oval Office came after Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent earlier in the day said in a closed-door speech that the trade standoff between the United States and China is not sustainable.

"We're going to be very nice, they're going to be very nice, and we'll see what happens," Trump told reporters when asked whether he planned to play "hardball" with Beijing and bring up with origins of the COVID-19 virus.

I saw that comment a lot on Facebook of all places. As he told Zelensky about not having the cards, he doesn’t either. China’s playing same hand Canada the EU and Japan did - Treasury Bonds

The rest of the world has banded together against Don, and they will not trust him on anything. Even if he does reverse the tariffs, they have no assurance he won't put them up again.

He begins to give away his position before any real talks, have begun. We all knew this, but he is just an idiot. He really really is not very smart.

1) Bessent has already backtracked on this, saying that they can come down as part of a negotiation with China. Does that mean in a year? Two years? and
2) Any tariff of about 30% or 40% or more might as well be 1000% because whatever products are hit with a tariff that big are not viable for purchase, so the tariffs coming "way down" is meaningless unless they are below 30%, and even then it is a gray area.

This does feel like market manipulation.

... from punching himself in the face. Don't worry, it's only round number 1 -- there are plenty more rounds for the Turd to clobber himself. You can take that to the bank.

Stuff from China represents a sizable part of the purchases I and millions of Americans make. Any tariff is a tax on the goods I buy and that spells inflation. The tariff tax is a bad idea any way you try to slice it. Get rid of the damn thing altogether and do it now.
