DOJ cannot provide unredacted Epstein files for New Mexico probe

Source: Detroit News/Reuters

Updated July 15, 2026, 8:19 p.m. ET

The U.S. Department of Justice said on Wednesday it was prohibited by law from releasing unredacted files on Jeffrey Epstein requested by New Mexico, escalating a feud with state officials investigating the late sex offender. New Mexico Attorney General Raul Torrez released a letter on Tuesday accusing the DOJ of deliberately obstructing the state's criminal probe of Epstein by failing to hand over the files.

“Federal law, court orders, and privacy protections for victims and witnesses do not allow us to release millions of unredacted documents," a U.S. Justice Department spokesperson said in a statement. "We will continue to follow federal law and the court orders that are in place."

In February, the Democratic-run state re-opened an investigation into activities at Epstein's former ranch, south of the capital Santa Fe, where he is accused of abusing women and girls for nearly three decades.

In response to the state's request that month for unredacted files, Torrez said the U.S. Attorney's Office for New Mexico on July 10 provided 31 pages of documents that had already been made public, contained redacted material that was unusable or were photocopies of local news stories.

The Epstein Transparency Act demands that they be released with redactions only of the survivors.

Information about the survivors is included in the first category.

Verbatim text addressing withholdings:

(1) The Attorney general may withhold or redact the segregable portions of records that—

(A) contain personally identifiable information of victims or victims’ personal and medical files and similar files the disclosure of which would constitute a clearly unwarranted invasion of personal privacy;

(B) depict or contain child sexual abuse materials (CSAM) as defined under 18 U.S.C. 2256 and prohibited under 18 U.S.C. 2252–2252A;

(C) would jeopardize an active federal investigation or ongoing prosecution, provided that such withholding is narrowly tailored and temporary;

(D) depict or contain images of death, physical abuse, or injury of any person; or

(E) contain information specifically authorized under criteria established by an Executive order to be kept secret in the interest of national defense or foreign policy and are in fact properly classified pursuant to such Executive order.

to be adjudicated in court? And when the DOJ loses, how long will their appeals take? The underlying question is what specifically are they hiding and why? It's clearly something really awful.

Every single person who was involved in Epstein's sex trafficking needs to be held accountable. Beyond that, I wouldn't count on being able to run out the clock on this. When this sees a courtroom, the DOJ will definitely be forced to turn over this info.

It is doubtful we will be seeing any more of the Epstein files and there will be no further investigations or prosecutions. It’s likely any remaining files have already been destroyed. Trump’s criminal takeover of the DOJ is a fait accompli.

Because everybody knows by now, when you work for Trump, you eventually wind up under the bus. So they have to make as much as they can before they get to the last bus stop.

Crickets on that aspect. If they let them move forward with whatever the "new owners" wanted to do, it's destroying a potential crime scene.
