Deadline looms for airmen to submit waist-to-height ratio after Hegseth's vow to crack down on 'fat troops'

Active-duty members of the U.S. Air Force have until the end of the month to submit their waist-to-height ratios to leadership, part of a Trump administration crackdown on military fitness.
To strengthen our readiness, every Airman must focus on fitness and appearance standards, Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Ken Wilsbach wrote in a letter on Monday.
The fitness standards, which call on Airmen to maintain a ratio below 0.55, are an important component of our overall fitness program and provides commanders another tool to understand the readiness and health of the force, Wilsbach continued. Finally, continue to uphold our dress and appearance standards, he added. A professional image reflects discipline, pride, and attention to detail.
The ratio requirements, which reservists have an extra month to submit, come as part of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseths campaign against what he has called fat troops in the military.

(6,481 posts)Way back in '92 I was almost kicked out of the USAF under an identical purge. It didn't matter that I was the second fastest runner in my squadron's fitness-run for four years, running rings around all the smokers and the guy who drank a pot of coffee before each run only to end up vomiting in a ditch; nor did it matter that those with one more stripe on their sleeve could still be the fattest, laziest fucks imaginable. They needed to reduce troop numbers, and that meant airmen, not sergeants, and their "standard" was literally a simplified cartoon illustration of a man in uniform with an hourglass figure that I could never match.
If my contract wasn't due to run out two days after the arbitrary deadline, I would have been bounced with a "Less Than Honorable" Discharge. THEY STILL TRIED. Fortunately for me, the new OIC took charge about a week before, and when he looked over my paperwork and saw I was getting out anyway, he tore my sarge a new asshole for wasting his time trying to fuck someone over just to be a dick.
It's not about pride or readiness. It's all arrogance and ignorance, and cutting corners.

But yes, the military always has had fitness requirements and programs to help troops with managing their health, this is not a new concept. Just because they want them to be robots it doesn't mean mother nature will stop taking her time on our bodies.
and yes, how about the alcoholics? There are many servicemen and women who are struggling with that amongst many other things , self-inflicted or not.
