House passes bill that would make daylight saving time permanent

Efforts in Congress to make daylight saving time permanent sprang forward after the House passed legislation that would remove the need for Americans to adjust their clocks twice a year.
The legislation, known as the Sunshine Protection Act, passed 308-117. It would put the country on the time currently observed from March to November unless a state exempted itself before the act took effect. President Donald Trump publicly pushed Congress to pass the legislation. He wrote May 21 on Truth Social that he was going to work very hard to see The Sunshine Protection Act signed into Law.
Its time that people can stop worrying about the Clock, not to mention all of the work and money that is spent on this ridiculous, twice yearly production. It will also be a very nice WIN for the Republican Party. Take it! Trump wrote. The bill now heads to the Senate for consideration. A Senate version of the Sunshine Protection Act stalled last year after Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., objected to fast-tracking the bills passage via unanimous consent in October.
Cotton said the change to permanent daylight saving time could lead to overlooked negative consequences, pointing to parts of the country where the sun wouldnt rise until 9 a.m. or later and citing potentially dangerous, dark morning commutes and workers who would need to work early mornings without sun.

Hopefully Senator Asshole Cotton can force this into debate.
Otherwise, goodbye

(23,654 posts)If so, then 9 p.m. sunsets will continue. Except in winter it'll be 6 p.m.-ish. The problem is it'll still be dark at 9 a.m. in winter.

(39,590 posts)My bad. I read the opposite for some reason.

(24,840 posts)If daylight savings becomes year round, it wont affect sunrise/sunset in the May-September period, it will affect the winter months the most.
The sun wont rise until 9am or later, depending on how far north you live, and sunset would be a reasonable 5-6pm, depending on how far south you lived.

(10,749 posts)Of course it stays light an hour later which in the dead of winter is totally worthless. Lighter earlier in the morning for what reason?
Ridiculous...........
Fiendish Thingy
(24,840 posts)It will be dark until at least 9am, and I expect there will be an increase in injuries and deaths of kids walking to school in the mornings.

(22,413 posts)This means it gets dark late. Standard time it gets dark early.

(3,255 posts)Why set our schedules based on standard time values then adjust the time to daylight savings time to because we don't like it. And not everyones life/work even revovles around a 9-5 schedule.

(22,413 posts)Better? Adjust the schedule instead, get up an hour later.

(39,010 posts)Exact same number of hours of daylight. No amount of rearranging our sleep schedules twice a year can "save" any daylight.

(14,805 posts)Just my 2 cents. I don't have a dog in the fight. I don't mind the clock changes or the late/early sunrise/sunsets at all. I've always just found it part of the cool experience of living on a planet that has seasons.

(1,004 posts)kids who would get run over waiting in the dark for the school bus.
What we have now sucks, but it's the least bad of all the other systems. If we go back to Daylight Saving time year round, people will die as a result -- mainly school kids.
But Republicans only care about kids when they're in the womb, not when they're out of it, so of course they're on board with this bill.

(39,010 posts)The claims of fatalities caused by the change are greatly exaggerated. In the year prior to the change there were 18 pre-sunrise fatalities. When daylight savings time was eliminated, there were 20 pre-sunrise fatalities. Given the increase in pre-sunlight bus pickups, a change of 2 is not particularly significant - and might even be a lower accident rate, given the increase in quantity of children waiting in the dark. And, if the concern is the time school starts relative to when the sun comes up, set the start of school at a reasonable hour.
The accidents around the time change days are because of the challenge of adjusting sleep schedules, not because of light v. dark. People drive safely in the dark all the time.

(1,004 posts)accidents with children, I assumed what I posted was sound. Thanks to your efforts, I now realize what I said was wrong and should have researched the matter beforehand.
I believe the main reason winter Daylight Savings in the 1970s was discontinued was that everyone HATED it, including myself. The idea that kids were getting killed waiting for the school bus helped to justify our hatred and its termination.
However, I stand by my main point that the current system we have now, though flawed, is still the best method we have to deal with the change in the hours of sunlight that occur during the year.
But if we must go to a year round static system, then I agree with wackadoo wabbits post wed be better off making it Standard Time instead of Daylight Saving Time.

I found this one the most interesting:
Study suggests most Americans would be healthier without daylight saving time by Nina Bai, Stanford Medicine News Center

And this one relating to how to protect heart, especially during switching form standard to daylight.

Given a choice, I think I'd probably prefer sticking to standard time.

I've never worn a watch, possibly because I've had a lot of jobs where that would be dangerous or would interfere with the work.

(41,020 posts)... for things like railroad and airline schedules, hospitals, and other 24/7 workplaces. There would be no confusion about time when events of worldwide interest happened -- things like international football matches, moon landings, etc.
Otherwise time would be measured locally in hours from sunrise. The time of sunrise varies by season and place but that could be kept track of by phone apps or digital clocks. For children and teachers school might always start at "two hours after sunrise." Such a time keeping system would be kinder to our biological clocks. Our daily lives would be organized in a manner similar to that of our ancestors who lived before the invention of clocks.
