University of Chicago bans use of phones laptops for law students to curb AI use

Beginning this fall, first year law students at the University of Chicago will be banned from using phones, tablets and laptops in class. This is a new policy at the university to curb AI use.

Some of the feedback that was received is that the university wants to ensure students learn to think critically, strategically, and independently without relying on artificial intelligence.
The university will teach students AI, but that will be in upper level courses.
Faculty will be able to experiment and develop their own AI policies for elective courses, however phones and laptops will still be banned for test taking.

Yeah I'm old - I was born in the 1950's - but today's kids are still able to learn if we give them the tools for learning. Maybe they will learn in a different way than we did, but that's OK.
We can't allow them to use cell phones and tablets to cheat and take shortcuts - these aren't learning tools, they are shortcuts. First they have to learn, and the shortcuts can come later.
You want to focus on whether they can write in cursive... here's my suggestion. You can give your nieces and nephews a gift of your knowledge, and have home-schooling type classes and teach them how to write cursive. Make them practice, and make them show you their work. You do it for them, and it's something they will always remember.
